The University Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas’taki ana kampüsü ve Kansas eyaletindeki çeşitli uydu kampüsleri, araştırma ve eğitim merkezleri, tıp merkezleri ve sınıfları olan bir devlet araştırma üniversitesidir. Kansas merkezindeki Kansas City metropol bölgesinde iki şube kampüsü bulunmaktadır: üniversitenin tıp fakültesü ve Kansas City’deki hastanesi, Overland Park’taki Edwards Kampüsü ve eyalet başkenti Topeka’daki bir hastane ve araştırma merkezi. Kansas Orta Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’nde bir ABD eyaletidir. Başkenti Topeka ve en büyük şehri Wichita, en kalabalık ve en büyük istihdam merkezi Johnson County’dir. Kansas kuzeyde Nebraska, doğuda Missouri; güneyde Oklahoma, batıda Colorado ile sınırlanmıştır. 2019’da National Geographic’s En iyi Gezi destinasyon şehirleri arasında Kansas’ı da seçmiştir. Lawrence birçok parkları ve gölleri ile tanınan bir şehirdir. Her yıl şehirde festivaller düzenlenmektedir.
The University Kansas 1863’de Kansas Valisi Thomas Carney, Lawrence’taki devlet üniversitesini yaratan bir yasa tasarısını imzaladı. 1866’da ise 55 öğrenci ile ilk sınıfını açarak eğitime başlamıştır.İlk sınıf 1873’de mezun olmuştur. II.Dünya Savaşı sırasında Kansas, öğrencilere bir donanma komisyonuna giden yolu sunan V-12 Donanma Koleji Eğitim Programında 131 üniversiteden biriydi. Bugün ise 28.500 öğrenci kayıtlıdır. Öncelikle tek bina ile faaliyet başlayan okul sonrasında Lawrence kampüsü, Overland Park’taki Edwards Kampüsü ve Kansas City, Wichita ve Salina’daki tıbbi merkezler kurulmuştur. The University Kansas, (AAU) Association of American Universities – Amerikan Üniversiteler Birliği’nin bir üyesidir ve Carnegie Yüksek Öğretim Kurumları Sınıflandırılması tarafından “R-1: Doktora Üniversiteleri-En Yüksek Araştırma Faaliyeti” arasından sınıflandırılılır. U.S.News&World Report, 2020 raporunda The University Kansas ulusal üniversiteler arasında 130.sırada yer almıştır. U.S.News&World Report’un 2016 sıralamasında Şehir Yönetimi ve Kentsel Politika ülke sıralamasında 1., özel eğitim programı sıralamasında 2.sırada yer aldı.Ayrıca USN&WR Amerika Birleşik Devletleri arasında ilk 25’de yer aldı.
The University Kansas kampüsünde öğrenciler için ayrı bir yaşam oluşturulmuştur. 600’den fazla öğrenci organizasyonu, 25 tane öğrenci konut sitesi, 80.000’den fazla öğrenci hizmeti saati organize edilmiştir. Öğrenciler için spor kulüpleri bulunmaktadır. University Kansas Allen Fieldhouse Basketbol Orijinal Kurallar organizasyonuna ev sahipliği yapmaktadır. Kampüste modern öğrenci yurtlarının içinde mutfak, fitness merkezi, eğlenci merkezleri bulunmaktadır. Öğrencilerin rahat bir şekilde yaşamaları için öğrenci apartları da bulunmaktadır.
